Bertie the Bat | The 1990 CITV Classic That Taught Us to Keep the Sky Clean

A winsome bat with elephantine ears, a bee called Humble Bumble, and a friend who paints sunsets from a powder-blue armchair on a cloud... sound familiar? 🦇☁️ Bertie had a winsome face with large round eyes and elephantine ears, and wings that trailed behind him like a cloak. Much given to out-of-tune renderings of cabaret standards, he proved he wasn't just any old bat by enlisting the Skypainter's help in decorating his wings – soon becoming a Day-Glo op-art bat! Narrated by the brilliant Bernard Cribbins – the perfect choice, switching from a mellow, doleful narrator's tone to a wonderfully off-key screech as the voice of Bertie – this was a handmade, heartfelt gem with an important message.
