Dark Towers (from Look & Read) Ghost Knights, Crooked Villains & The BBC Serial You Watched in Class

A haunted house, a friendly ghost, a towering knight, and two kids who have to save the family treasure... sound familiar? 🏰👻 Written by Andrew Davies (who later adapted Pride and Prejudice and Bleak House) and produced by Sue Weeks, the show aired on BBC Two from 22nd September to 24th November 1981. It ran for one series of 10 episodes, each about 20 minutes long, and was designed to improve children's literacy through an engaging story told over several weeks. Parts of the film were shot at Sutton Court in Somerset. The plot followed Tracey Brown (Juliet Waley) and Lord Edward Dark (Gary Russell) as they tried to stop a gang of crooks – led by the sinister Miss Hawk (Juliet Hammond-Hill) – from stealing the treasures of Dark Towers. Along the way, they encountered the Friendly Ghost (David Collings), a Tall Knight (Peter Mayhew, who later played Chewbacca), and a pair of bumbling villains named Benger (Christopher Biggins) and Bunce (Harry Jones). The show was narrated by Sean Barrett.
