Granpa | The Channel 4 Gem From The Snowman's Creator You've Probably Never Seen
Published 28 Sep 2026 View on YouTube ↗
A little girl, her beloved grandfather, and adventures animated in beautiful hand drawn pencil... sound familiar? 👧👴✏️
Based on John Burningham's 1984 picture book, Granpa first aired on Channel 4 on 31st December 1989. It was produced by TVS for Channel 4 Television, directed by Dianne Jackson – who had previously adapted Raymond Briggs' The Snowman into the beloved 1982 classic – and produced by John Coates. Running just 26 minutes, it was an expensive film to produce, hand-illustrated entirely with coloured pencil to imitate Burningham's distinctive style.
The film follows young Emily, who visits her grandfather through the changing seasons. Each visit transforms their everyday activities into extraordinary adventures: caterpillars and spiders become giants, the house becomes Noah's Ark, a rollercoaster turns into a Spitfire, fiery dragons appear on the bed covers, and tendrilled jungles grow in the greenhouse.
# please note, in the video I mention that as its out of print on VHS and never released on DVD, it makes it hard to see. By that, I mean see officially. There are versions on vhs you can still buy online if you have a hunt, or search here on youtube. But it doesnt now appear to be officially available anywhere to watch.
