It starred the brilliant Elizabeth Spriggs as the Witch – an eccentric, elderly, and gloriously chaotic character – and Hugh Pollard as Simon, the sensible young schoolboy who befriends her. The cast also featured guest stars including Joan Sims. The show followed the magical (and often disastrous) adventures of the unlikely pair. From teaching Simon a backwards spell that turns the school gardener into a frog (and forgetting how to turn him back!), to losing her magic wand and accidentally becoming a policewoman, to making the English Channel disappear on a seaside trip – the Witch was a force of nature that nobody could control.
