Stoppit and Tidyup | The Surreal 1980s BBC Cartoon from the Makers of Trap Door
Published 20 Sep 2026 View on YouTube ↗
A red ball of fluff, a tie-wearing purple perfectionist, and a land where gherkins grow everywhere... sound familiar? 🟥 💜
First airing on BBC One from 12th September to 5th December 1988, the show ran for one series of 13 episodes, each just 5 minutes long. Created by Charles Mills and Terry Brain, with animation by Steve Box (who later worked on Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers and Chicken Run), it was set in the bizarre Land of Do-As-You're-Told and partly funded by The Tidy Britain Group.
The characters are all named after phrases parents say to kids – Eat Your Greens, Comb Your Hair, Wash Your Face, Go And Play, I Said No, Hurry Up, Calm Down, Don't Do That, Go To Bed, and Say Please And Say Thank You. The main duo? Stoppit (a messy red fluffball who lives in a dump) and Tidyup (a purple perfectionist with a tie and a gherkin obsession).
None of them speak – they gabble, grunt, and squeak while the legendary Terry Wogan narrates every adventure.
